Any and every fashionable ensemble is incomplete with an apt pair of stylish footwear. BT does a footwear forecast about the designs which will be ‘in’ this year, so you could go grab your pair, without any style questions in mind.

Footwear fashion in 2010 will not only see a practical approach that is more subtle and simple than the last year but will also carry great emphasis to the comfort factor as well. Yes! Comfort will be the keyword as most designers affirmed that they are opting for comfort and practicality over stylised forms, which may not be very comfortable on the foot.

Although it is said that fashion is fickle there are some styles like a stiletto that will never go out of fashion. Here is what some of the style gurus had to say about the trends that will be seen this year.

There are two main trends according to me. One is fashionably sports driven shoes and the other is the evening wear that has a lot of shine. Sandals are big for both men and women. Bright colours will dominate the scene and the demure blacks and whites will take a back seat. Flat sandals in various colours are in for women. For evening wear, the classic stilettos still rule the roost and open-toed sandals are big.

Sandals are big at the moment. Flip flops in the brightest hues and funky designs will be seen everywhere and so will something simple like a rope slipper or woven cane sandals for both men and women. High tops in tans and brown will be hot. Studded boots with chains can add drama. The key is footwear that spells comfort.

Platforms, six-inch heels and wedges are going to be big and back this year. Gladiators and shoes in vibrant colours such as hot pink, gold, turquoise are going to get popular too.

For the coming season, it’s all about summery flip flops, flat shoes and pumps to go for. Even embellished gladiators seem to be in trend.

I think the best buy would be Kolhapuri chappals, nice hand made colourful sneakers. As far as our footwear is concerned this year is going to see a lot of experimentation and exploration with colours, prints, some wacky tag lines on sneakers. As the footwear in a way is an expression of ones feelings and nature. Also as far as heels are concerned some metallic colours can also be of use as they gel well with any outfit or colour you are wearing, as opposed to the old-fashioned trend of having matching footwear with your outfits. That is a big no for the fashion conscious!

The first name that comes to mind when you talk about shoe trends for 2010, is booties. Knee-high boots or thigh high ones these are a sure fire way to update your wardrobe.

The thongs slip-ons and sandals in bright colours with beads and jewels would be an ‘in’ thing 2010 spring and summer. And of course, stilettos will never go out of fashion. The trend of the stiletto for 2010 is square or trapezoid heel of six inch stilettos in glossy leather.

Corset gladiators on comfortable heels are in and that means bold strappy footwear with ankle straps on comfortable heels or wedges. Every style is being seen in a hybrid fashion for for example hybrid clogs are going to be big this year. Ankle straps are very big this season whether it is on flats, wedges (platforms) or on stilettos. Peeptoes will be seen in parties and peeptoes on wedges are particularly hot.

But nothing can beat the sky high stilettos for the party season in black and red.
